The Polish atletiekkampioene Irena Szewinska is Friday night at the age of 72 in Warsaw, died. That has the Polish news agency PAP announced. Szewinska was suffering from cancer.
Szewinska was the ‘Grande Dame’ of the Polish athletics in the 1960s and 1970s. She won seven olympic medals, including three gold: in the 200 meters (1968 in Mexico), the 400 metres (1976 in Montreal) and the 4×100 meters (1964, in Tokyo). Further, she conquered seven European titles and broke them ten times the world record in the 100, 200 and 400 metres. After her career came Szewinska to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
