Composer and music producer Martijn Spierenburg, mainly known as one of the driving forces behind rock band Within Temptation is working on a large new Dutch musical about the origins of New York. He develops the project of New-Amsterdam, together with songwriters, Frans van Deursen, Edwin de Vries and Theu Boermans. The musical, which is in 2020 in the premiere, the long-awaited successor of mega-hit “Soldier of Orange”.
The creative team now has the script completed. It is not yet clear where in the Netherlands the show will be played; at this point, three possible sites were investigated, made producer Fred Boot of New Productions Friday known.
“We think the story of the first settlers of New Amsterdam, under Peter Stuyvesant and Adriaen van der Donck, an important native historical story to tell,” says Boot. “Especially in the current polarized society, this is part of our history as current. We hope our role in the creation of New York with topics such as tolerance, democracy and the lighting is very nuanced question.”
The writers visited last week in America, descendants of the Seneca and Mohawk, native Americans of the tribe of the Iroquois, to research for the project. They were under more extensive information about the musical traditions of the native Americans. Also works with the creative team, along with historians from the Rijksmuseum and the biographer of Peter Stuyvesant.
