Ajax acknowledges that the club is liable for the situation of Abdelhak Nouri. That made general director Edwin van der Sar on Monday announced at a press conference in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
“We are recently new insights have come and it appears that the treatment has been adequate. Our deepest apologies to the family that it has lasted so long to clear is exactly what happened. It feels to me like a huge shock,” said an emotional Van der Sar.
Nouri got in July 2017 at the friendly match of Ajax against Werder Bremen in Austria with heart failure and had to be on the field to be resuscitated. The now 21-year-old midfielder has severe and permanent brain damage and will, according to his doctors never able to function normally.
The family of Nouri concluded on the basis of experts that provided medical care at the fatal moment was insufficient, and moved last month to the arbitration committee of the KNVB. The family wanted that Ajax its liability and responsibility acknowledge and the Amsterdam club will do that now also.
