LUXEMBOURG – The European Court of Justice, Germany has been sentenced because the government has done too little to the nitrate levels in the drinking water to reduce. The pollution is mainly caused by manure from agricultural lands into the water.
The European Commission challenged Germany in 2016 for the court because the country for years to little undertook against the pollution. The first warning was already in 2014. The national action plan was insufficient, and the European nitrate directive has been violated, the court finds.
Germany is ordered to pay the costs of the lawsuit. The mestregels are now tightened, report German media, although according to the critics, yet not far enough.
Nitrate is harmless, but can in the body to be converted into nitrite, a substance that may be carcinogenic.
