The Brussels architectural practice 51N4E has the hoofdvogel shot at the European Prize for Public Urban Space, with their transformation of the Skanderbergplein in the Albanian capital, Tirana.
51N4E (the agency is named after the coordinates where, at the time, was founded, in Brussels) has more contracts won in the Albanian city of Tirana. Their most recently completed project is the Skanderbergplein, that is surrounded by many historic buildings.
The Belgians hertekenden the square to a pedestrian zone, and created ” a void in the chaos of the city’. The square, by a green belt, separated from the city, it was heraangelegd with stones from various parts of the country.
The jury of the European Prize for Public Urban Space under the guidance of Olga Tarrasó could the transformation be very tastes and crowned the Brussels office to be the winner of the tenth edition of the architectural competition.
In addition 51N4E there were still Belgian offices in the prices. The Ghent based architects De Vylder Vynck Taillieu and independent research bureau Bavo received a special mention for their project PC Caritas, a pavilion of a former psychiatric center in Melle that of the demolition, was saved and was transformed into a meeting place. The project was earlier this month awarded a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale.
Among the finalists were another Belgian projects: Monument for an Open Society (ORG Permanent Modernity), Memorial 22/3 (Bureau Bas Smets) and Play Landscape be-mine (Environment, landscape architecture and urbanism, Carve). Also Albanian projects of Bas Smets and Xaveer de Geyter made to the list of finalists.
