Georges Leekens is Tuesday dismissed as coach of the national team of Hungary. The 69-year-old Belgian was only seven months working as a coach from the Central-European country.
Leekens was in mid-november was appointed as the successor of the German, Bernd Storck, who departed after the failed kwalificatiecampagne for the world cup.
He received from the Hungarian bond as a mission to the national team to guide them to the european CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020, which is in thirteen different countries is finished. The team was under Leekens, however, did not convince in four friendly matches.
The Hungarians played equal against belarus (1-1) and lost to Kazakhstan (2-3), Scotland (0-1) and Australia’s coach Bert van Marwijk (1-2). It was decided to no longer continue with Leekens.
“Those four games were encouraging, but there was no clear progessie to see in the team”, explains the Hungarian bond out. “Our rejuvenation and change of play style were not to the expected speed made.”
The Italian Marco Rossi has been appointed as the successor of Leekens in Hungary, which two years ago at the european CHAMPIONSHIPS in France in the eighth-finals, which is impressive. It was with a 4-0 loss to Belgium.
For Leekens was his sixth job as a head coach. He was in his long trainerscarrière previously the hotel manager in Belgium, from 1997 to 1999 and from 2010 to 2012. He was also a two time national coach of Algeria (2003 and 2016 to 2017), and once of Tunisia (2014 to 2015).
In the Netherlands, was Leekens in the season 2001/2002 coach of Roda JC. He pulled out with the Limburg club in the eighth finals of the UEFA Cup.
Leekens had more Club Brugge, Anderlecht and KAA Gent under his wing. His first club as a trainer was Cercle Bruges in 1984.
