Like the day before yesterday, in the framework of the Ethereum Core Devs Meeting #40 was known, is considering the development team behind Ethereum two ground – breaking Upgrades to the Blockchain-Sharding and Casper together.
On the Meeting Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, said on Friday that the originally planned order of the Upgrades could be changed in accordance with the Roadmap, to enable Casper and Sharding the same time with an Upgrade. This is due to new findings and progress in the research of Sharding.
To Proof while Casper for the exchange of the consensus algorithm Proof-of-Work-of-Stake full, should Sharding be the key to the scaling of the Ethereum network, to be able to a massive number of transactions to process. Originally, Casper should be used as a Smart Contract to be realized. The Core Devs Meeting, as presented, the new proposal provides, however, that Casper is implemented on a Shard or on a side chain.
The idea of Sharding is the Ethereum Blockchain in countless segments (English: Shards), which are able to process transactions faster and more effective. Currently, each Node stores in the network all the information. While this has the advantage that the safety is extremely high, because a Manipulation is only possible with great difficulty.
However, this has the great disadvantage that the scalability is severely limited. Here Sharding comes in. Ethereums Sharding solution, one that provides all of the information in the network to be divided into so-called Shards. This means that some Node must process only certain Shards, each Shard still has access to the information of the other. Hereby, the scalability would be increased significantly.
A treatise on Casper FFG was first released in October 2017, as it has been presented with a Proof of Stake based System by Vitalik Buterin and Virgil Griffith. At the end of April 2018, the Ethereum improvement proposal (EIP) 1011, better known as a Hybrid Casper FFG (abbreviation of “Friendly Finality Gadget was published”), a first basis for discussion for the major Upgrade on Github.
Casper sets a hybrid Proof of Work/ Proof of Stake consensus model for the Ethereum network, and thus creating the Transition from energy-intensive Mining process (Proof-of-Work) to eco-friendly Proof-of-Stake consensus. Long-term the Ethereum should be changed Blockchain completely to Proof of Stake.
The Ethereum Core developer seemed to grow in the framework of the conference, impressed by the idea of Sharding and Casper together. According to Buterin, the combination would have several advantages (freely translated):
The development of a system is a lot of direction on the way to be, and we expect that it will be the final Sharing System.
In addition, Buterin said (freely translated):
The Casper component is a little more separated from the main chain. This means that they can be developed in a way independent and have their own rules. There is a much clearer separation between these systems.
Vitalik Buterin continues to assume that the Implementation of Casper could cut on a Shard or on a side chain, the cost required for a backup of the Blockchain to dramatically. The cost for participation in the Staking process would fall to Buterins the latest estimate of 1,500 ETH-32 ETH.
Should enforce the idea, this would probably mean that the next Hard Fork, Constantinople, contains no Changes that are related to Casper.
