D. J. Fontana, the first drummer of Elvis Presley, on Wednesday died. That his son David Fontana Thursday reported via Facebook. Fontana was 87 years old.

D. J. (Dominic James) Fontana met Presley in 1954 and formed with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black for years, his first band, The Blue Moon Boys.

Fontana played on 460 Elvis songs, including hits such as Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Return to Sender, and Viva Las Vegas.

In 1983 he published a book about his years with The King.
