Number one Halep breaks the spell and wins after thrilling final at Roland Garros, her first Grand Slam

The vrouwenfinale at Roland Garros between Simona Halep (WTA 1) and Sloane Stephens (WTA 10) promised an unpredictable match. And that was it. The American began however if a steamroller and has already won the first set. The Romanian fought back in the second set, and the number one of the world was the authoritarian in the decisive third set: 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1. It is the very first grand slam victory for the 26-year-old Halep.

For Halep, it was the third Roland Garros final in five years time, and the 26-year-old Romanian was able to finally even win… Last year, she lost to the Danish Caroline Wozniacki. Halep retired in this edition in the fourth round of our compatriot Elise Mertens with 6-2 and 6-1, and had to for the final in only two sets lost on the Parisian clay.

Sloane Stephens was for the first time in the final of Roland Garros but she had to be the experience of a Grand Slam win, because the 25-year-old American won last year’s US Open. Stephens had only one set lost this tournament and won more of titelverdedigster Ostapenko and Wozniacki.
