Kanye West likes a chaotic albumrelease. In the run-up to The life of Pablo (2016) took the rapper less than three titelveranderingen and tig coverwissels by. He put a big listening party – cum-fashion show on in Madison Square Garden, which gelivestreamed was in dozens of theaters in 26 countries, but it took another three days for the recording of the album on streaming service Tidal-comers. And even then it was still not off: in the subsequent weeks remained to the West of new versions of the album to upload.

Just to say: there was a barrel full of sea salt ready when West mid-april tweette that his eighth album would be released on 1 June. But Thursday proved to be the West, nevertheless serious: he had his production team the assignment was given to about 150 lucky ones to invite for a listening session in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in Grand Teton National Park. Underneath were fellow rappers like Nas, Kid Cudi, Lil Yachty and 2Chainz, but also a number of international journalists – an employee of Variety described how he and a few colleagues, including a private jet to Jackson Hole gekard were, in order, ultimately, to land in a meadow full of giant speakers, in addition to a dozen astonished horses.

For interested fans, it was less glamorous: they had to make do with their smartphonescherm. West had a few hours before the listening party namely known that the whole event live to follow would be via the app Wav. And so were we last night on our screen, transfixed. Because West is one of the most successful rappers of this century, but a forced hospitalization for psychological problems, a recent embrace of Donald Trump and comments about how four hundred years of slavery, ‘a choice’ was made, had questioned his genius.

The first hour was, however, waiting for Godot: the streamcamera was tight on an empty meadow directed. But there came life in the brewery: Kanye and his entourage did the pasture flooding. Suddenly grabbed comedian Chris Rock to the microphone to the album. ‘Just remember this: rap music is the first art form created by free black men. And no black man has duties more advantage of his freedom than Kanye West. I can’t wait for y’all to hear this.’

Then hustle Kanye at play: on a half an hour, the seven tracks of the new album, which is simply Ye turned out to be called, it hunted. The livestream focused especially on how Kanye the party itself polite: he was, surrounded by friends and family, especially great to enjoy his own shit. And it must be said: we understand it. The audio quality of the livestream was not the best, but West seemed to refer to the soulsamples that his early hits, colored, and had the often dark, aggressive sound of the youngest plates Yeezus and The life of Pablo largely omitted.

Textual made West for a number of surprising references to his strange behavior over the past weeks. ‘I think about killing myself, and I love myself way more than I love you’, it sounded in the albumopener. And in the fourth number appeared Wests slavery-notes on a crisis in his marriage with Kim Kardashian ensured to have. ‘My wife is calling screaming how we bout to lose it all/ had to calm her down, cause she couldn’t breathe/ told her she could leave me now/ but she wouldn’t leave’.

After West the album again in its entirety was happening, went to the stream offline. Now we have to wait until the album up on the streaming services. Given the launch of The life of Pablo, that may take some time. But anyway there is the next few weeks, still plenty of Kanye on the program: on 8, 15 and 22 June would be the Kanye produced albums from Kid Cudi, Nas, and Teyana Taylor to follow.
