Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez spoke Thursday of a sad day for his club. Succestrainer Zinedine Zidane made five days after winning the Champions League, announced that he is departing.
“We respect the decision of Zidane,” said Pérez. The 71-year-old chairman was by the Frenchman a day earlier informed of his departure.
“When he told me that he wanted to stop, that had a big impact on the board,” said the president. “He was very successful at our club. We thank him for his dedication, his passion and everything he has for the club has done.”
Zidane won with Real Madrid in two and a half years, nine awards, including three times in the Champions League. He thinks that the club needs a fresh approach. The 45-year-old coach still has no new club.
Pérez: “I love him as a footballer and now he is coach, is no different. I would always be with him, want to collaborate, but it is his decision. I can be there only in support.”
Zidane is regarded as one clubicoon of the ‘Royal’. As one of the ‘Galacticos’ he played between 2001 and 2006 in Estadion Santiago Bernabéu. Thanks to a wonderful volley from Zidane won Real in the 2002 Champions League in the final with 2-1 win of Bayer Leverkusen.
