Elise Mertens has Thursday posted for the third round of Roland Garros. And how: the 22-year-old Hilly knew in the second round, no problem with the 26-year-old British Heather Watson.
Sixteenth seed Elise Mertens (WTA 16) made an impression against Heather Watson (WTA-80): they won in two short sets: 6-3 and 6-4.
Against Watson played Mertens already two times and two times she went to the longest end. Last year he defeated her in the quarterfinals of Luxembourg with twice 6-4 and in January of this year, she won in the semi-finals in Hobart 6-4, 1-6 and 6-2.
1/8th finals beckon
Last year had to Mertens at her first participation at Roland Garros in the third round packing after a defeat against Venus Williams (WTA 9).
In the third round to take Mertens, this time against the winner of the duel between the Australian Daria Gavrilova (WTA-25), and the American Bernarda Pera (WTA 73). Two viable cards. Mertens knocked Gavrilova last year in the first round of Roland Garros and vloerde her again this year at the Australian Open. Pera won Mertens a few months ago in Miami in two sets (7-5 and 6-3). In a possible quarter-final is, however, another story for Mertens. Than wait for a possible showdown with Simona Halep. The Romanian is the number one in the world and played last year’s final in Paris (which they like in 2014 lost).
