The family of Michael Jackson television station ABC and its parent Walt Disney sued for unauthorized use of songs and videos from The King of Pop, reports Variety.
The case goes to the tv special The last days of Michael Jackson, who on march 24 was broadcast. The family claims that the producers without permission, the music of Beat it, Billie Jean and The Girl Is Mine for the documentary used. Also, there are snippets of music videos, including Thriller and parts of the concert This Is it.
According to the family, Disney has never asked permission for the use of the music and the images. Disney believes that according to the ’fair use’rules, it is allowed to use the material for a documentary.
Lawyers of the Jackson’s say, for comparison, that Disney would never allow images of Mickey Mouse or Star Wars be used without permission for a two-hour documentary.
Variety Disney has asked for a response to these statements, but not yet received a reply.
