Heather Watson (WTA-80) is the opponent of Elise Mertens in the second round of Roland-Garros. The 26-year-old British won on Monday just before the raining opened, of the Française Océane Dodin (WTA-139) in two sets: 6-3 and 6-0.
“I am very satisfied,” responded Watson after her victory against Dodin. “I knew that they are often all-or-nothing play, and very hard can save. Therefore it can have a lot of winners store and that meant that I was very aggressive to play. And I’m able to do that. I am very happy, because I difficult months behind me. If you are always in the first round lose and the journalists always talk about, is not easy to do. Last week I was able to that negative spiral, finally breaking through the Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko (WTA-57) to defeat in Nürnberg. That was good for my confidence.”
That difficult period, in which Watson no less than seven times in the first round was eliminated, began in January with a defeat against Elise Mertens in the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Hobart. When won Mertens in three sets: 6-4, 1-6 and 6-2. Watson is out on revenge.
“Mertens has a very good year. She is a great tennis player. I have her trail at the Australian Open is not followed, but know what is waiting for me. She stands firmly on her legs. I think we have a similar play-style. She moves well and loves to be in the counter-attack. I think it’s a fun competition will be. But it is a fact that if I want to win, I very strongly will need to be”, concluded Watson.
