Binche presents “wrecking” course for BC championships

On Sunday 24 June to find the Belgian championships on the road for men and women elite place in Binche. The men ride thirteen times a loop of 17.2 km with start and arrival at the Large Market, the women do the loop six times. That turned out to be Tuesday at the presentation of the BK at the headquarters of the Belgian cycling federation (KBWB) in Brussels.

After the start on the main Market of the Hainault town there is a couple of kilometres of false flat, then a long descent follows with along the way what stijgingsmeters. A kilometers before the finish is a climb of half a kilometer cobblestone with an average gradient of 4.4 percent (Rue de la Pépinière) on the menu. Along the way does the pack approximately 1,300 metres of cobblestones, and the men so thirteen times will drive.

On the “very severe and debilitating” trail expect race director Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke, a “strong rider” will prevail. “Especially if it gets warm, it will be very difficult. The cobbled roads are not like in Paris-Roubaix, but they are not to be underestimated. The arrival is the same as that of the Binche-Chimay-Binche, on the Grand place of Binche.” Vandenbroucke considers Philippe Gilbert and olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet as the favorites. “This year will be the world CHAMPIONSHIPS in Innsbruck is not an objective for them, because the trail is less. They will also have on the Belgian kampioenentrui aim. Also with, among others, Tiesj Benoot and Tim Wellens can I keep the account.”

Last year, the new Oliver Naesen in Antwerp to the Belgian champion. In the women obtained Jolien D’hoore her fourth national wegtitel. With four wins (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2004), Tom Steels, the record-holder.
