LONDON – The former speaker of the British house of Commons Michael Martin is at the age of 72 and died after a short illness. That his family has Sunday announced, according to British media.

Lord Martin or Springburn was between 2000 and 2009, chairman of the house of Commons and member of parliament for Labour on behalf of the Scottish Glasgow, his native city. He resigned because of a scandal surrounding expense claims. He was the first speaker in 300 years who resigned.
