Hyperandrogene athletes, such as two-time olympic champion in the 800m, Caster Semenya, will, in the future, their testosteronwaarden (with medication) to do fall in order to participate in championships on the medium distances (400m, 800m and 1500m) and the-meter hurdles. That was announced by the International athletics federation (IAAF) on Thursday. The new rules as from 1 november.
The measures come after a by the IAAF led research put forward that “interseksuele athletes”, who have an excess of testosterone production, favoured at certain distances.
The IAAF was compelled hyperandrogene athletes in the past resources have to swallow to get their testosterone level to decrease, but the International Sporttribunaal (TAS) did the association of athletics in 2015 back. There had to be more evidence be provided and that there is currently.
The most famous hyperandrogene athlete is Caster Semenya. The South African won both the Games of Beijing (2008) and Rio de Janeiro (2016) gold in the 800m. She was also three times world champion at the same distance.
