Boring Arsenal changed within a few years in a well-oiled aanvalsmachine. “He was fantastic in that period, but like many dictators he thought still on the right track. But if people are calling for change, he changed nothing,” continued Robson.

“Arsenal under Arsene Wenger in recent years has been too one-dimensional and lag behind in a number of areas. Something better than his departure, had Arsenal not be able to happen.”

Praise for the Frenchman

Arsenal legend Rob Wilson has only positive words in store for the Frenchman. The 76-year-old Scot burst into tears on the English radio. “He is without doubt one of the best people I have ever in my life encountered.”

The daughter of Wilson died in 1998 at the age of 31. “It’s not only his knowledge of football and the way football has changed, but as a human being he was there in a difficult time for me and my wife.”
