GENT – It seems like a harmless publicity stunt, but the city of Ghent can’t laugh: two bus shelters by Ikea are transformed. The alderman was furious.
Cyclists would, by the bus shelters may be put in danger.
The bus shelters and advertising allowed by the city to be used by advertising agency Clear Channel Belgium. “We have a clear contract with them”, says city councillor Filip Watteeuw, who is responsible for the public space.
“In that contract rules. If they have something special to do, you can do so, but only with the consent of the government, the city so. Here it is not asked for permission. And we would also not have given.”
According Watteeuw is the biggest problem in safety, as he tells us at The Newspaper. “It is dangerous: this hinders the visibility of cyclists at the Dampoort,” he says.
“In addition, the timetable is not clear. This can not be. We have Clear Channel to know that they are advertising have to uninstall today. Otherwise, we do it, at their expense.”
At Clear Channel Belgium could currently not be reached for comment.
