Two Flemish productions are selected for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, the most prestigious side section of the Cannes film festival. It is going to be “Ce magnifique gâteau!” by Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, and “Our Song to War” from Juanita Onzaga. That has the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF) today let us know.
“Ce magnifique gâteau!” is a historical animated film. The Ghent animatieduo Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels broke through internationally with “Oh Willy…”, a short animated film from 2011 that more than 80 film awards binnenhaalde. “Ce magnifique gâteau!” tells in four chapters, the story of five characters in the colonial Africa at the end of the 19th century. For the voice cast did De Swaef and Roels appeal to include Jan Decleir, Wim Willaert and Sébastien Dewaele.
Juanita Onzaga was selected with her short documentary, “Our Song to War”. The Colombian-Belgian filmmaker won in 2016, a VAF Wildcard with her graduation project “The Jungle Knows You Better Than You”, a short experimental documentary about a brother and sister in the mystical landscapes of Colombia in search of the ghost of their murdered father. “Our Song to War” is a continuation of the 4×7-documentary (on Canvas) “River of Forgiveness” that Onzaga in 2017 turned and is about Bojaya, a town in Colombia that the scars of the slave trade, and extreme violence.
In the past, had several Flemish films selected for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, an independent parallel program of the international film festival of Cannes, which was created after may 1968. The last time was in 2011 with “Blue Bird” by Gust Van den Berghe.
Last week it became known that with the first “Girl” by Lukas Dhont for the first time in 29 years of a Flemish feature film is selected for “Un Certain Regard”, a part of the official selection of the Cannes film festival for bold movies and young talent.
The Quinzaine des Réalisateurs runs from 9 to 19 may.
