It does not happen every year: a Flemish directorial debut has the nevenselectie ‘Un certain regard’ at the Cannes film festival. It comes to ‘Girl’ by Lukas Dhont, a Flemish director who graduated from the KASK in Ghent with his short films ‘Corps perdu’ and ‘L’infini’ scored at the film festivals of Ghent and Leuven.

His first feature film, is about the 15-year-old Lara, who dreams to become a ballerina. Lara is struggling with a female identity and a male body. The choreography in the film is of the great choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. It is the final film in a production of Dirk Impens, that in 1995 in Cannes with ‘Manneken pis’ and in 2009 with ‘The misfortunates’. The previous Flemish film in ‘Un certain regard’ is al ago of 1989 with ‘The sacrament’ by Hugo Claus.

Biggest absentee is ‘The man who killed Don Quixote’ by Terry Gilliam, possibly because that movie but not made it was at this time struggling with a lawsuit. There will be later, perhaps even some of the titles be added to the program.
