The KNVB has Tuesday Franca Overtoom has been appointed as assistant referee on Friday in the Jupiler League match between Telstar and Jong FC Utrecht. The 26-year-old Overtoom is the third female arbitrator ever in English professional football.
The first female assistant referee was Sjoukje de Jong in 2001, at Go Ahead Eagles against VVV-Venlo. After two matches, she had already quit because of a hamstring injury.
Ten years later, Nicolet Bakker FC Volendam-Fortuna Sittard the two female judge and now Overtoom so the third. Quite unexpectedly it was not for the province of North Holland, in the women’s international operations.
“I kept in mind that it soon would happen, but due to my busy international programme was the question of whether the season would come,” said Overtoom in a first reaction to her appointment.
