The Italian Fabio Capello has resigned as coach of the Chinese first division Jiangsu Suning, so made the club from the Chinese Super League (CSL) on Wednesday known. The Romanian Cosmin Olaroiu is his successor.
The 71-year-old Capello had only nine months to get started with Jiangsu Suning, one of the richest Chinese clubs, which is run by the Suning Group, a Chinese giant in the retail industry, and since 2016 also hoofdeigenaar of the Italian Inter Milan.
“After consultation between both parties, the contract was stopped prematurely”, they said in a short notice. The Italian coach was there less than a year under contract, with an annual salary of ten million euros. The goal was simple: the club from the lower reaches of the standings wegloodsen. Last season the team from Nanjing, however, not more than a twelfth place out of a total of sixteen, this season promised the start with one victory and two defeats, not much improvement.
Capello was previously at the helm of, among others, AC Milan, AS Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid. At those clubs, he was good for five Italian league titles (four with AC Milan and one with Roma), two Spanish league titles (Real Madrid), and once the Champions League in 1994 with AC Milan). As a coach, he led England (2008-2012) and Russia (2012-2015). Capello denied interest in the job of national coach of Italy.
