Bert van Marwijk has a painful debut politely as coach of Australia. The first international match under his direction resulted in and against Norway in a 4-1 defeat for the Socceroos.
Bert van Marwijk saw Australia stand a chance of losing.
“I don’t like and certainly not with 4-1. But I’ve learned a lot from this match”, concluded Van Marwijk in the Ullevaal Stadium. “We are not ready, but I knew in advance. We just met and maybe once decent train. We knew that we could expect, but 4-1 is very, very much,” said Van Marwijk.
Especially defensively dropped in Australia after the 0-1, Jackson Irvine completely through the ice. “At the back we have problems”, acknowledged Van Marwijk. “We have two key players, Trent Sainsbury and Matthew Jurman, who, after blessureperiodes this week with our training but not yet fit enough to play. I hope that they stay fit and at their clubs to go and play. In addition, we are also looking for players that our defense better.”
The positive side of the painful schrobbering is that Van Marwijk is easier to doorselecteren and the team more to his own idea. Though there is little time on the way to the world cup. “I should not complain about too little time, because I knew the situation when I started. I’m incredibly happy that we will be able to really go to work with the team. From 19 may we have almost a month time to train every day. Then you can this team really rate.”
