Virgil van Dijk is the new captain of the Dutch national team, so coach Ronald Koeman announced on Thursday at his press conference in the Arena.
The 26-year-old Van Dijk is the successor of Arjen Robben, who in the autumn say goodbye to Orange. In the friendly Friday at the Arena against England wears the defender of Liverpool for the first time, the aanvoerdsband.
“Playing for your country is an honour, but to be the captain at all,” said Van Dijk, who was also present at the press conference.
At his previous club Southampton wore Van Dijk also all the aanvoersband. Last winter, he was by Liverpool for less than 84 million bought away at the club from the south of England, and thereby became the most expensive defender in the world.
The choice of Koeman to Van Dijk’s no surprise, though, Kevin Strootman, Daley Blind, Georginio Wijnaldum and Stefan Free also mentioned as candidates.
The coach has no fixed reserve captain appointed, but he said Thursday that Strootman, Wijnaldum or Blind, the band will wear as Van Dijk’s not there. “They sit ial n the spelersraad and its players that I have a lot of expect. But with a new start I decided it was time for a new first captain,” said Koeman.
