The Belgian delegation at the world CHAMPIONSHIPS, paralympic track cycling in Rio de Janeiro has a first medal. Diederick Schelfhout (CS3) reed Thursday in the qualifications to the second best time in the 3 km individual pursuit. He runs from 23h30 Belgian time, the final for gold and is now sure of at least silver.
Schelfhout reed in the qualifications 3:37.769. Only Australian David Nicholas (3:36.792) was faster. He is later in the evening, from 23h30 Belgian time, the direct opponent of Schelfhout in the final.
Also Ewoud Vromant (C2, rechterbovenbeenamputatie) got its start far from missed. The Herzelenaar makes its debut on the world cup and did that with a sixth place finish on the 3-kilometer individual pursuit. Vromant set with 3:56.563 a new Belgian record. He improved his own time by a whopping eleven seconds.
