Who would like a thrilling radio drama with a dash of horror and fantasy, may get a couple of nights to reserve for Carnivàle, hbo’s hit series from the stable of HBO.
Carnivàle takes you to the America of the mid-30s. Not a pleasant time: a huge economic crisis, disease and poverty … and dust, lots of dust. The Great Plains are ravaged by heavy sandstorms, and everything and everyone is covered by a thick layer of dust and sand. Add to that a more than decent serving of theft, corruption and murder, and you have the setting of Carnivàle.
Ben Hawkins, convincingly played by Nick Stahl, has a special, healing gift, which he himself, as a curse has to learn to see. When his ailing mother refuses his help, and dies, he joins a traveling circus. On a other place in the country preacher Brother Justin Crowe (Clancy Brown), the word of God, but at the same time, he has a dark side, cryptic nightmares, and special forces that he himself does not quite understand. The series follows two characters, each of which go away until they, inevitably, each other’s path crosses. Everything points to a battle between Good and Evil, but who is on which side?
