Martina Navratilova is angry at the British public broadcaster BBC. The tennis legend does not understand that she for her work at Wimbledon, much less is paid that John McEnroe. “He will get at least ten times more. It is shocking,” says the 61-year-old Navratilova.
The BBC rents the winner of eighteen grandslams (in singles) each year in order during the prestigious grastoernooi of Wimbledon, commentary and games analysis. Before she gets to say that about 15,000 pounds (17,000 euros). In the BBC program Panorama says Navratilova that she was “shocked” when she heard that McEnroe for his analyses of a much higher amount receive.
“John McEnroe deserves at least to 150,000 pounds, while that with me 15.000 pounds. Unless he have a lot of work in addition to Wimbledon would do, this means that he is at least ten times more. That for similar work,” says Navratilova. “Of course I am not happy with it. It is a shock. For me, this is a part-time job, the two weeks. For women who work full-time, if you are talking about a whole life view, to a lot of money.”
The BBC argues that McEnroes tasks during Wimbledon much more extensive than that of Navratilova. “But he does ten times as much? I don’t think so”, replies the former tennis champion.
The conversation with Navratilova is part of a reportage about the Equal Pay Act in Great Britain. That is in 2020, a half a century and should men and women equal compensation guarantee.
