The North Korean Ri Yong-ho arrived Thursday in Sweden for a meeting with his Swedish ambtsgenoot Margot Wallström. That led to speculation that the visit served to lay the basis for a meeting between the American president Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The Swedes stressed during the talks that North Korea has its nuclear weapons and missile programmes must dismantle, made the Swedish ministry of Foreign Affairs known. It is also discussed possibilities for a more peaceful way to put an end to the conflict over the nuclear ambitions of Pyongyang.

Sweden represents in North Korea the interests of the US. The North European country is seen as a possible host for the summit meeting between Trump and Kim.
