The controversial farmabaas Martin Shkreli is Friday in New York sentenced to seven years in prison. Shkreli was in August found guilty of beursfraude, but received only today from the court sanction hearing. He risked twenty years behind bars.
The 34-year-old Shkreli received in 2015 as ceo of a pharmaceutical company heavy criticism when he was a hiv-drug suddenly fifty times more expensive made. It earned him the title of ‘most hated man in America’. The condemnation of Friday, however, has nothing to do with that price increase.
According to the prosecutors sjoemelde Shkreli between October 2009 and march 2014 with two hedge funds, MSMB Capital Management and MSMB Healthcare. He lied to investors about how the funds were doing, and used money from a pharmaceutical company as ‘spaarvarkentje’ debt with investors to solve. This led to a kind of pyramid scheme.
The controversial businessman should be on the right approximately 7.4 million dollar (6.2 million euros) in assets. One of the things that he would away have to do is a mythical album of the hiphop group Wu-Tang Clan. Shkreli counted in 2015 approximately two million dollars down for ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a double album of the Wu-Tang Clan, of which but one copy is released.
