Kinepolis received in 2017 and 6.2% more visitors than the year before, on the one hand, thanks to the in 2016, acquired and newly opened cinemas in France (Rouen and Fenouillet), the Netherlands (Dordrecht, Breda, Utrecht, the netherlands) and Spain (Granada), and on the other hand, thanks to the acquisition of Landmark Cinemas Canada, in december 2017. The results of Landmark Cinemas counted from 8 december in the group results from 2017.
The quality of the movie in 2017 was very changeable. Exceptionally strong months were interspersed with poor periods. The first quarter (-0,8%) suffered from a difficult comparison base given the strong first quarter of 2016. In the second quarter (+13,07%) compensated for a successful month of april – thanks to ‘The Fate of the Furious’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Boss Baby’ – two weaker months of may and June because of the warm weather. The third quarter (+7,8%) had september an exceptionally strong month, thanks to the movie ‘It’, but was followed by a difficult fourth quarter, with a lack of high-quality content in October and november. The second half of december was exceptionally strong, thanks to a successful combination of international and local content with more ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last of the Jedi’, ‘Coco’ and ‘FC De Kampioenen 3’ in Belgium. The increase of the bezoekcijfer in the fourth quarter (+7,1%) is entirely due to the addition of Landmark Cinemas Canada from december 8, 2017.
The total revenue organically by 9.4%, a stronger increase than the bezoekcijfer, thanks to an increase in revenues in all business lines. Only Kinepolis Film Distribution (KFD) had a lower turnover.
