Country and blues is maybe not what musicalliefhebbers associate with Pia Douwes. However, Wednesday night also her private tastes on offer during the concert After All This Time in the DeLaMar Theater. “I would also like the private Pia show,” she says.
The reason for the one-off concert in Amsterdam is the cd Pia Douwes recently released. The album contains thirteen songs from world famous musicals that she sang during her theatercarrière for more than thirty years. During the concert After All This Time tells Pia also personal stories and anecdotes that they are on the stages both at home and abroad, and has been or what its got.
Pia: “People know me of musicals, but I see myself as a singer, actress and dancer with a specialization in musical. I sing like folk, country and blues, a side that many people don’t like me are used to. I find it fun to be in addition to the fourteen songs of the cd another side of myself to hear. Perhaps this is a taster for later, after the musicals. I sing in Germany, also pop and country and have six plays done. Outside the Netherlands, people are less of the box thinking.”
For the Vienna album, recorded After All This Time chose Pia aware of only English songs. “Multiple languages on one album I find strange.” Three German songs are, therefore, at her request, translated into English by Charles Hart, lyricist of The Phantom of The Opera and Aspects of Love. So was the famous song ‘my life is My own’ from the musical Elisabeth “I Live this Life for Me. And the German song ’die Welt gehört mir ” from the production of Der Besuch der alten Dame, it was the English Queen of the World. Heart translated the German song “Milady ist zurück” from the German version of the 3 Musketeers as Milady is a Phoenix’.
Pia: “The English translation of the songs are new to me and also the hardest songs of the whole evening. My voice is still used to hit these numbers in the German or English to sing. I find it so very exciting.”
Pia Douwes had never had a solo album. “When I was going through my cd collection turned the pages, I counted 65 cd’s which I hear am, often collect cds, musical cds or albums of others. This album contains all the wonderful songs that have played a major role in my career.”
