JERUSALEM – The Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is closed on Sunday, as a protest against new tax legislation and grondpolitiek. The Greek-orthodox patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Roman Catholic Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church have let us know. They are the main administrators of the church.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that the administrators of the church fiercely oppose a new plan of the board of directors of Jerusalem for the taxation of church property. Further, they are angry about a proposal of a ministerial commission on church land. If this proposal is adopted, the government would have the power to country to expropriate by the Greek orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church is sold.
This is the land which is now in the hands of private entrepreneurs in real estate. People who are under that companies have purchased are worried that they if the new legislation once it is introduced, must leave at the end of their allows.
