No surprise in Middelkerke: Mathieu van der Poel, already certain of the overall victory in the Superprestige, if onbedreigd celebrate at the Belgian coast. The Dutchman has continued despite a bad start and a crash halfway through the race the rest more than 15 seconds. Tim Merlier and Michael Vanthourenhout were allowed on the stage. Wout van Aert is in Spain for his season to prepare for.
Mathieu van der Poel began actually not good in Middelkerke. He popped up only a tenth of the field, and had a small sore rid on Tim Merlier and later also Michael Vanthourenhout. Both leaders were, however, after about fifteen minutes in the company of Mathieu van der Poel, who, thanks to a solid effort from brother David joined the leidersduo.
Then had Van der Poel enough to a strip of sand of about one hundred metres to the sore to save. Merlier remained not on the pedals, Vanthourenhout was surprised, and the Dutchman was already ribbedebie. However, seventeen minutes voltage. On a half round reed VDP eleven seconds ahead of meeting, even a crash in a slippery corner was the victory of Van der Poel.
In the background, it was a long exciting for the second spot. Vanthourenhout and Merlier remained a long time side by side, but just before the start of the penultimate lap, went to that last moment in the error. Merier remained stuck in the creek just for the asphalt, but still just on the bike and had a small hole toward the West-Flemish people. While Van der Poel the audience knew to entertain with a jump in the air on the bridge, hit Merlier, ultimately, the decisive sore. Van der Poel-on-one with 15 seconds ahead of Merlier, Vanthourenhout finished in three.
End of season
Absent in Middelkerke was Wout van Aert. The world champion put last weekend a point behind his veldritwinter and is currently hard at work gearing up for a spring on the road. The lump sum of van Aert has no consequences for the top two in the final standings: Van der Poel was already eindmanche sure of title, Of Aert ends at place two. Only for the third place, there was still (a little) tension, there were Laurens Sweeck, Toon Aerts and Lars Van der haar is still in the running.
The veldritseizoen is almost completely. Sunday is still the cyclocross in Hulst (BRICO cross) on the program, Wednesday next week is the Masters in Waregem held in artificial light. Next week Sunday in Oostmalle an official point is set behind the veldritseizoen.
