PARKLAND – The shooting at a school in Parkland, Florida, was not the first of this year. In the first month and a half of 2018 had been eighteen shootings take place at schools. According to the ontwapeningsbeweging Everytown for Gun Safety know the United States an average of one school shooting per week since 2013.
In the United States, there are nearly as many guns (300 million) as there are residents (323 million). Thus, there are twice as many weapons per person as a half-century ago.
The Americans constitute 4.5 percent of the world’s population, but own 48 percent of the firearms that are worldwide in the hands of private individuals. Half of all the weapons in the US is in the hands of only 3 percent of the population.
