The 21-year-old Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor has Tuesday for a stunt format taken care of at the ATP tournament of Rotterdam (1.862.925 euro). The number 259 of the world defeated the Swiss Stan Wawrinka, thirteenth in the world rankings and former number three, in the first round with a 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
The 32-year-old Wawrinka works after knee surgery, on the way back. The winner of the Australian Open 2014, Roland-Garros 2015 and the US Open 2016 made in January after a months-long absence, his comeback to the Australian Open, but came in Melbourne no further than the second round. Last week, he reached in Sofia in the semi-finals.
The first set did Wawrinka, in the 2015 tournament winner in Rotterdam, still to attract. But in the second set he made a lot of mistakes. Griekspoor benefited optimally. In the deciding set knew the Dutchman Wawrinka in the first game to break and then he decided the party handsome in his favor.
Griekspoor was speechless after his victory. “It’s incredible. I just don’t know what I have to say. I was in the first game a little tense and became as it was broken. But then I served well. Halfway through the first set I got in the holes that Wawrinka is not in his best do was. My experience of last year in Ahoy has helped. I go here just as well enjoy it.”
Griekspoor made last year with a wildcard debut in the main draw. He lost when the Luxemburger Gilles Müller (ATP 28). Also for this edition, he received an invitation from tournament director Richard Krajicek.
In the second round he is the winner of the duel between his countrymen Robin Haase (ATP-42) and Thiemo de Bakker (ATP-352).
