A series of photographs of the Belgian photojournalist Alain Schroeder has been nominated for the World Press Photo 2018 in the category sportverhalen. He photographed kinderjockeys during the horse races in Indonesia.
The jury of the World Press Photo 2018 selected Alain Schroeder with his black-and-white series about the races of Maen Jaran on the Indonesian island of Soembawa. Kinderjockeys between 5 and 10 years old drive there every year without a lot of protection on small horses.
Schroeder, born in Luxembourg in 1955, founded in 1989, the well-known photo agency Reporters. He already has dozens of books published, among others, the carnival of Binche, about European abbeys and about countries such as China, Thailand and Vietnam. His work was also published in National Geographic, Geo and Paris-Match.
