Guillermo del Toro won last year’s Golden Lion for “The Shape of Water” and should in september the jury of the 75th Venice film festival chair. That the organization has yesterday announced. The Mostra de Venise is the world’s oldest film festival.
The decision was taken by the board of directors of the Venice Biennale, of which the Mostra part, on the recommendation of Alberto Barbera, director of the festival. For Alberto Barbera is the “Del Toro is generosity itself, the cinema lover who is not only facing the past, but for the passion for the cinema is able to both move as if to reflect.”
“The presidency of the Mostra is a huge honor and a responsibility that I, with respect and gratitude accept,” says the 53-year-old del Toro in the statement. “Venice is a window on world cinema and provide an opportunity for the strength and cultural importance to celebrate”, he added. His film with 13 nominations, the top favourite for the 90th edition of the Oscars in early march. It previously won 2 Golden Globes, 3 Critics’ Choice Awards and was nominated for 12 BAFTA Awards.
His previous successes are not of the least: “Cronos” (1993), “Blade II” (2002), “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), “Hellboy” (2007) and “Pacific Rim” (2013). He contributed to the screenplay of “The Hobbit”trilogy.
