The British filmtijdschrift Empire Magazine asked its readers to vote on a list of criminals from well-known films. The result is a motley collection of the most nefarious characters ever seen on the white cloth appeared.
The list with the ‘movie villains’ Empire is kicked off by Michael Myers from the Halloween series, on place 20. Then came the sting, and lapping along under other Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street) and Agent Smith (The Matrix) along Sauron, Alien and Voldemort towards the top 10.
As the ultimate villain in sight, it is clear that a character – in order to qualify for the title – not one-dimensional bad, but also a certain devilish charm should possess. Think, for example, to SS-colonel Hans Landa in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, a character of Christoph Waltz on a sixth place finish.
But the ultimate villain, at least according to the readers of Empire, Darth vader from the Star Wars movies. From the same series, incidentally, two other criminals in the list: Palpatine on 15 and newcomer Kylo Ren on a creditable seventh place. Silver and bronze are respectively The Joker from Batman and Loki from the Thor series. Their top 5 is as follows:
- Darth Vader (Star Wars)
- The Joker (Batman)
- Loki (Thor)
- Hans Gruber (Die Hard)
- Hannibal Lector (Silence Of The Lambs)
The full list, with justification, can be found on the site of Empire.
