Beaufort, the triennial art event at sea, turns eighteen artists spread over nine coastal municipalities. With the sea as a theme.
“The works in Beaufort 2018 go looking for the free thinking nature of the coast,” says curator Heidi Ballet. The specific atmosphere is also present in the surrealism of Ensor and was inspiring on the American soulzanger Marvin Gaye and the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig.’
Ballet chose eighteen artists such as Katja Novitskova Estonia. She was recently at the biennale of Venice. Also a lot of Belgian artists do. So will, inter alia, the Brussels-based collective Rotor, Guillaume Bijl, Stepchild, DeSmet and Frederik van Simaey their works present.
This edition should be accessible and free of charge, without the further improvement of artistic value. “Both the art – and culture lovers, as the kusttoerist must be with the feet in the sand and can enjoy the installations. This will bring Beaufort a little bit back to the original concept, ” says West-Flemish minister for Tourism, Franky De Block (SP.A).
The previous edition was quite a bit of criticism, especially from the coastal communities themselves. For this edition, was the curator in conversation with all the municipalities and they had a say in the work and the locations. Blankenberge decided to not participate. The resort has other plans.
Beaufort 2018 will also have a lasting character, for certainly seven works remain on the coast.
The province of West-Flanders comes himself, with 1.5 million euros over the bridge. ‘Tourism is the main economy on the coast. The competition, however, is hard, so we must continue to innovate. Beaufort gives a reason to go to the shore and in this way, culture is the gateway to a tourist added value, ” says De Block.
Beaufort takes place from 30 march to 30 september 2018.
