5 Questions Interview

5 QUESTIONS WITH DAVE MERHEJE

Toronto comedian Dave Merheje

by Ryan Meehan

Dave Merheje is not a terrorist.  I know this for a fact because he’s produced a series of stand-up shows called the “We Ain’t Terrorists” Comedy Tour.  (Why spend all of the money on the drones when you can just do the research for free?)  His arithmetic interpretation of urbanized life makes him one of Canada’s most original stand-up comics working today, and he’s also our guest this week in 5 Questions.

FOH:  Let’s talk about the whole terrorism thing for a second – do you ever feel pressured into telling certain types of jokes onstage because of your Middle Eastern descent?

DM: Not really, I will mention at one point in my set what my background is which is Lebanese, because it relates to a joke…but 90 percent of the time I barely mention it…

Dave’s 2010 release “Make ‘Em Cry”

FOH:  Your album “Make ‘Em Cry” came out back in 2010.  Has your approach to comedy changed since then, and if so how?

DM: I think I have evolved more because I keep on practicing every night going on stage and finding my self more on stage and bringing more of personality up there.

FOH:  Has “the internet era” of comedy changed the whole game completely?  Or do you feel as if since the main goal has remained to make people laugh that very little has changed?

DM: I think the internet era has for sure.  More people can put up videos of funny things happening and not really go out to the stages…They can get millions of hits from their homes. But I think the internet has helped stand up comics so much though because now we can find our own audiences and tour ourselves and make money.

FOH:  Do you get a lot of people mistaking you for David Cross?  And is that cool with you?

With the beard, I can see it…

DM: Ha ha yes, it use to be Ali G so I am very fine with David Cross..They just say I look like him that’s all…even if they don’t know I am a comic.

FOH:  What does your writing process usually consist of?  Is it always the same or do you change it up from time to time?

DM: It’s basically the same, I try to come up with ideas in  my head all day or I draw from personal experiences that happen to me on a regular basis, I will share everything about my life on stage.

Absolute Merheje

FOH:  What’s next for Dave Merheje in the twelve months to follow?

DM: Right now working on putting together a new CD, and I am going back to Just for Laughs this year so working on my set…Touring and doing College gigs in Canada and the United States.
