Comedian Jim Florentine is best known for his portrayal of both Special Ed and Bobby Fletcher from the Comedy Central show “Crank Yankers”. He is currently the host of “That Metal Show” on Vh1 along with Eddie Trunk and Don Jamieson, and can be currently be seen on The Killers of Comedy Tour with the Reverend Bob Levy, Sal the Stockbroker, and The Iron Sheik. And not only has he won an Emmy for his correspondent work on HBO’s “Inside The NFL”, he’s also this week’s guest in 5 Questions.
FOH: With all due respect, you’ve made quite a career out of pranking. At what moment did you realize that you could make real money from doing that?
JF: I just thought I would make up a CD of prank calls and sell them after my shows to make a few bucks to support my lap dance addiction. I never imagined it would go this far.
FOH: How did you get a gig with Inside the NFL?
JF: A producer there named Brian Hyland knew of my past work and put his ass on the line and put a low life like me on the air on a super conservative show. I wound up winning an Emmy for the show and hung out with my idol Dan Marino. It was the greatest gig ever.
FOH: Did Special Ed ever make it to Hawaii?
JF: He was on his way but he shit his pants and had to go back home. Yaay!
FOH: Who was the coolest person you interviewed on “That Metal Show” and why?
JF: Marilyn Manson. I’m a big fan and never met him before and he was an amazing interview.
FOH: If you could, what grade would you give heavy metal in 1986, and what grade would you give it today in 2011?
JF: 1986 – B. It was the year before all the bands started to look and sound the same. 2011- B. Big 4 still going strong. Priest, Maiden, Motorhead, and Ozzy still going strong. Great new bands like Five Finger Death Punch and Ghost
FOH: That being said, what’s the brightest spot about the current state of metal? And what is an example of something that is wrong with the current state of metal?
JF: Brightest spot is newer and older bands are still making great music. Not so good: Concert halls are only half full due to the economy and high ticket prices.
FOH: What’s do the next twelve months hold for Jim Florentine?
JF: A lot of masturbating.
