Billy Beane…..Too Big For His Own Ego

unicorn - Billy Beane…..Too Big For His Own Ego

Trade Rumors swirl around Major League Baseball this week as teams look to fill some holes for this upcoming season. One proposed trade really caught my eye, but not for a good reason.

The Cincinnati Reds are looking for another solid starter to bolster the rotation, but they might be looking under the wrong rock. When they inquired about a trade for Joe Blanton Oakland Athletics GM – Billy Beane offered them this deal:

Joe Blanton

for

Homer Bailey, Joey Votto and Johnny Cueto

A quick glance at Baseball Prospectus or any other prospect ranking guide and you will notice that he is asking for 3 of the top 4 prospects in the Reds system. How do you even come to the table with this offer? I understand getting the most value for your player, but this has to be a big slap in the face to the Reds. Billy might as well ask them to throw Jay Bruce and a Unicorn in there while he is at it. Some would say “what is the harm in asking?”, and I respond with “with an offer like that, it tells me that you aren’t really in the market to trade him, come talk to me when you want to get serious”. I go back and forth on what I think of Billy Bean. You can get a true sense of how intense he is by reading Moneyball by Michael Lewis, and most of the time the guy rubs me the wrong way. With this offer it puts him solidly in the “don’t like him” category again (as if he cares what I think). I could see him asking for this kind of talent for Dan Haren, but Joe Blanton? A 3-4 starter who is considered a ground ball pitcher and will probably give you 14-16 wins. The amount of wins that you would potentially loose in the trade would not be offset with Blanton.

Only a week away from Pitchers and Catchers reporting. Can’t wait for the Baseball season.
